Game Notes

Game Summary

It was guaranteed win night at the SkyDome in Toronto. Toronto head coach Mike Faragalli told fans his Argonauts would win the game or they would be given free tickets to their Labour Day match against San Antonio. At game time it looked like a win might be hard to come by with starting quarterback Kent Austin out with a pulled calf muscle. However, fans looking for the free tickets were disappointed as the Argos came out ahead of the Eastern Riders 37 to 24. Ottawa got on the board first late in the first quarter when QB Danny Barrett threw a nine yard pass to RB Michael Richardson. The Argos opened the second half with a 61 yard touchdown bomb from QB Erik White to WR Darrick Branch. RB Reggie Barnes broke the tie with a 2 yard touchdown run. With 2:05 left in the first half Wayne Lammle, who converted both Argo TDs, split the upright from 34 yards out to give Toronto a 17-7 lead. White threw his second touchdown pass of the game to Jock Climie. Lammle kicked the convert after the 49 yard scoring play to give the Argos a 24-7 lead at half time. Ottawa was first to score in the second half when Richardson capitalized on a 24 yard pass interference call with a 1 yard touchdown run. Barnes notched his second rushing TD with a 1 yard run 3:04 into the fourth quarter. Ottawa picked up three more points as kicker Terry Baker missed a 27 yard field goal for a single and Toronto kicker Wayne Lammle conceded a safety. Ottawa continued their come back with Richardson scoring his third touchdown of the game on a 40 yard pass from Barrett. The play was converted by Baker. The Argos put the game out of reach with fifty-four seconds left in the game as Barnes recorded his second rushing touchdown of the game from 2 yards out. The 18,404 fans left SkyDome with mixed feelings — the first win of the season but no free tickets.
