Game Notes

Game Summary

The heavily favoured Calgary Stampeders needed 7:42 to put their first points on the board. Last year’s league MVP Doug Flutie threw a 14 yard pass to his favourite receiver Allen Pitts for a touchdown. K Mark McLoughlin scored the first of six converts for the night. McLoughlin made good on a 52 yard field goal to start the second quarter scoring. Shreveport got on the board when Billy Joe Tolliver threw a 50 yard touchdown pass to WR Wayne Walker. Bjorn Nittmo made good on the convert to make the game 10 to 7 for the Stampeders. Flutie ran in the next Calgary TD on his own from the Shreveport 2-yard line. Minutes later Nittmo hit a 42 yard field goal to bring Shreveport within a touchdown of Calgary. Before the end of the quarter Flutie threw his second TD pass of the game to Pitts from the 6-yard line. With the convert the score at the end of the first half — Calgary 24, Shreveport 10. Calgary continued to dominate the game in the second half out scoring Shreveport 24 to 7. Calgary’s scoring came from touchdowns by Tyrone Edwards – 1 yard run, Tony Stewart – 3 yard pass from Flutie, Terry Vaughn – 23 yard pass from Jeff Garcia, and from a 13 yard field goal by McLoughlin. Shreveport countered with Wayne Walker’s second touchdown pass from B.J. Tolliver. Defensively, Calgary dominated, sacking Tolliver six times throughout the game. DE William Johnson led the sack attack with three.
