Memphis and Saskatchewan are fighting for the final playoff spot in their respective Divisions. Memphis entered this week tied with San Antonio and Birmingham at 12 points (second place) and Saskatchewan trailed Winnipeg by 2 points placing them in sixth. In a spirited contest it was Saskatchewan who came out on top. The Roughriders opened the scoring with Warren Jones hitting Dan Farthing with a 5 yard touchdown pass. Dave Ridgway kicked the convert. Memphis kicker Nick Mystrom got the Mad Dogs on the board with a 42 yard field goal. The ’Rider’s Ridgway countered with a 24 yard field goal of his own. Before the quarter ended, Memphis tied the game. Damon Allen threw an 8 yard pass to Walter Wilson in the end zone for the score. Mystrom made the convert. Saskatchewan dominated the second quarter. Ridgway kicked field goals from 32 and 55 yards out. RB Robert Mimbs also helped the ’Rider cause by taking the ball in from the 7-yard line for the major. Ridgway again kicked the convert. Allen threw his second TD pass of the game for the Mad Dogs to open scoring for the second quarter. Joseph Horn caught the 40 pass and Mystrom kicked the convert. Saskatchewan’s punter Brent Matich scored a single when he sent a 43 yard punt into the end zone. Mimbs scored his second rushing TD of the game at the 7:10 mark of the third quarter. His 3 yard run was capped with at Ridgway convert making the score 31 to 17 for the home town squad. The teams each scored field goals before the end of the quarter. The fourth quarter saw Memphis control the ball while managing to keep Saskatchewan off the score board. Mystrom kicked a field goal from 34 yards out to open the scoring for the Mad Dogs. Allen and Horn hooked up for the second time of the game. This TD was a 14 yard passing play to cap an 87 yard drive. Allen threw to Alfred Shipman for the two-point convert to bring the Mad Dogs within a field goal of the ’Riders. With no time left on the clock, Mystrom had a chance to tie the game for the Mad Dogs. His 34 yard field goal attempt went wide to score a single. Saskatchewan was able to even this year’s series with the win and tie Winnipeg in fifth place.
