The first game of a home and home series between these two Northern Division powerhouses took place in B.C. Place Stadium Friday night. The Eskimos dominated the first of two games with the Lions to move into a tie for second place in the North. The game started slowly with B.C. scoring a field goal before the end of the quarter. Lui Passaglia put the kick through the uprights from 37 yards out. Edmonton fought back in the second quarter tying the game at the 5:45 mark. Kicker Sean Fleming put the field goal attempt through from the 45-yard line. Eskimo quarterback Kerwin Bell threw a 22 yard touchdown pass to Shalon Baker to take the lead. Fleming’s convert attempt was good. B.C.’s Passaglia sent his second field goal attempt of the night through to bring them within 4 points of Edmonton. Minutes later, Passaglia ran out of the end zone to concede the safety for Edmonton. The Eskimos extended their lead just before the end of the half when Baker caught his second TD pass of the night. The 9 yard pass from Bell, followed by Fleming’s convert made the score 19 to 6 for the Esks at half-time. Fleming opened the scoring in the second half making good on a 29 yard field goal attempt. Lion punter Passaglia and Eskimo punter Glenn Harper both scored singles before the quarter ended. In the fourth quarter, Edmonton WR Nick Mazzoli extended the Eskimo lead catching an 11 yard pass from Bell for the major score. Fleming kicked the convert. B.C. back up quarterback Giulio Caravatta took the ball into the end zone himself from the 1-yard line to account for the Lions only TD of the game. Cory Philpot rushed for the two-point conversion. Sean Fleming booted his third field goal of the game to round out the Eskimo scoring. His 40 yard shot gave Edmonton 33 points on the day. B.C. were able to put 3 more points on the board before the end of the game. Passaglia sent a 31 yard attempt through the uprights giving B.C. 18 points for the day. The two clubs head into this week’s game tied with 18 points in the standings.
