Game Notes

Game Summary

The Argonauts and Roughriders met on Saturday in the SkyDome in front of 14,000 fans. Saskatchewan needed the win to help in their battle for a playoff spot. With an extremely tough schedule ahead of them, every game is precious. Toronto was determined to help their own cause and came out of the gate very strongly. Kicker Terry Baker opened the scoring for the Argos with a 38 yard field goal. Later in the quarter “Pinball” Clemons carried the ball into the end zone to extend the Argo lead. Baker kicked the convert. Baker missed a 42 yard field goal attempt wide but did manage to score the single just minutes later. Saskatchewan got on the board for the first time at the 12:07 mark of the second quarter when Warren Jones hit Elbert Turner with a 23 yard pass for a TD. Dave Ridgway kicked the convert. Toronto missed another field goal later in the quarter and scored the single again. Ridgway put three points on the board with no time left in the half. The ’Riders kicker sent a 32 yard field goal through the uprights making the half time score 12 to 10 for the Argos. Ridgway opened the scoring in the second half hitting another 32 yard field goal. Duane Forde scored Torontos’ second TD of the game catching a 5 yard pass from QB Kent Austin. Baker kicked the convert. Toronto only managed one more point during the game. Baker sent an 83 yard kick off into the end zone to score a single. Saskatchewan made a strong come back in the fourth quarter. Ridgway notched his third field goal of the game, this time from 29 yards out and Jones scored a rushing TD form 1 yard out to give the ’Riders the lead. Ridgway’s convert sealed the victory. Toronto was not able to comeback. Saskatchewan’s win moved them two points ahead of Winnipeg in the battle for the final playoff spot.
