The Mad Dogs entered Sunday’s game against the Barracudas trailing the ’Cudas by two points in the standings for the final playoff spot in the Southern Division. Field goals were the norm on this day as eight were scored during the game. Birmingham kicker Luis Zendejas put the first FG on the board from 20 yards out. Memphis countered with their first TD of the game. Damon Allen hit Shawn Collins with a 6 yard pass for the score. Nick Mystrom kicked the convert. In the second quarter the ’Cudas put three field goals on the board to regain the lead. Zendejas made good from 24, 37, and 44 yards. Memphis moved to within 2 points of the Birmingham with a late field goal by Mystrom from 40 yards out. Memphis punter Peter Gardere opened scoring in the second half sending a 72 yard punt into the end zone for a single. Kicker Nick Mystrom notched his second field goal of the game on a 20 yard attempt to take a 2 point lead. Memphis scored another TD on a 2 yard rushing play by Gary Anderson. Mystrom kicked the convert. Matt Dunigan countered for Birmingham hitting Delius Morris with an 18 yard pass for a touchdown. Zendejas’ convert left the ’Cudas trailing by 2. Memphis did not let up. Mystrom extended the lead to a FG by scoring a single on a missed field goal attempt. Mystrom continued to put points on the board hitting field goals from 43 and 15 yards to make the final Memphis 28 — Birmingham 19. The Memphis win puts them in a tie with Birmingham but Birmingham has one game in hand.
