Game Notes

Game Summary

30,000 people filed into Commonwealth Stadium in hopes of seeing Edmonton clinch second place in the North Division and in tum secure at least one more home game for this season. Their hopes were fulfilled with a convincing 34 to 17 victory over Memphis. The Mad Dogs got on the board first when Nick Mystrom hit a 46 yard field goal early in the game. Edmonton countered with a 32 yard touchdown pass from Kerwin Bell to Eddie Brown. Sean Fleming kicked the convert. Memphis kicker Peter Gardere narrowed the gap with a 55 yard punting single. As time ran out in the first quarter, Mystrom booted a 50 yard field goal to tie the game. Defence dominated the second quarter with Memphis doing the only scoring. Mystrom sent his third field goal through the up rights with 0:18 left in the half to give the Mad Dogs a three point lead. Edmonton tied the game up in the third quarter when Fleming kicked a 37 yard field goal. The Eskimos regained the lead with no time on the clock in the third quarter. Eric L. Blount caught a 28 yard pass from Bell for the major. Fleming kicked the convert. Edmonton extended their lead in the fourth on Blount’s second TD of the game. Bell threw a 19 yard pass for this score. Fleming’s convert attempt missed. Minutes later, Fleming attempted a 47 yard field goal but missed and scored the single. Memphis caught up some of the deficit as Shawn Collins caught a 9 yard pass from Damon Allen. Mystrom’s convert attempt split the uprights. Edmonton kicker Fleming made good on his next field goal attempt from 30 yards out. The Eskimos continued to dominate the second half when Blount ran the ball in from the 13-yard line for his third TD of the game. Fleming’s convert made the final 34 to 17 for the Eskimos — securing second place in the North Division.
