Game Notes

Game Summary

A large crowd of 28,744 jammed into Winnipeg Stadium last Friday night to see their home town Bombers take on the Edmonton Eskimos. At the end of the evening however, the Winnipeg fans left the stadium downtrodden as the Bombers dropped a 41-12 decision to the Eskimos. The Bombers did however carry a 3-0 lead into the second quarter thanks to a Troy Westwood 28 yard field goal at 6:56 of the opening frame. The Eskimos wasted no time getting on track in the second quarter as QB Danny McManus, who was returning to the line-up from an injury, kept the ball himself for a 6 yard major. K Sean Fleming added the convert and the Eskimos didn’t look back. Fleming added to their lead at 1:09 when he split the uprights from 25 yards out to make the score 10-3. The Eskimo offence continued to roll along as short yardage specialist LB Willie Pless plunged in from 1 yard out at 13:39 for the major. The Fleming convert made the half-time score 17-3 in favour of the Green and Gold. As he did in the first half, Westwood opened up the scoring at 3:23 booting a 27 yard field goal. He added a 34 yarder 3:20 later cutting the Edmonton lead to 8. Fleming countered with a field goal of his own at 10:30, a 16 yard chip shot restoring the Eskimo 11-point lead. Edmonton put the game out of reach at 12:55 when the newest Eskimo, SB Don Blair, corralled a Bob Cameron punt and returned it 85 yards for his first ever CFL touchdown. Fleming added the convert making the score 27-9 after three quarters of play. Following a Troy Westwood 48 yard field goal, “The Giz”, WR Henry Williams, got into the action returning a Cameron punt 79 yards for the major. The Bombers were the only CFL team which Giz had not scored a punt return TD against prior to this game. The Eskimos rounded out the scoring at 13:34 of the final quarter when RB Tony Burse scampered 59 yards for the TD. The ensuing Fleming convert topped off a 41-12 Eskimo victory.
