Game Notes

Game Summary

Yes, it was that time of year. The summer rounding to a close, the kids preparing to return to school and the Stamps and Eskimos gearing up for yet another edition of the Labour Day classic. On a perfect sunny Monday afternoon, McMahon Stadium was jammed to capacity as 37,611 turned out to witness what was sure to be another epic battle between these two provincial rivals. Edmonton opened the scoring at 4:08 when K Sean Fleming’s 40-yard FG attempt sailed wide. The Stamps’ first points of the game came at 7:46, when Fleming conceded a safety touch. The Calgary offence got on track late in the opening frame and at 13:53 RB Kelvin Anderson scored the games first major, a 1-yard TD run. QB Jeff Garcia found SB Allen Pitts alone in the end zone completing the two-point convert attempt and the Stamps were up by a 10-1 score after one period of play. Garcia got the Stamps rolling 10 seconds into the second quarter calling his own number from 1-yard out. The Mark McLoughlin convert increased the Calgary lead to 17-1. McLoughlin increased the Stamps’ lead with FGs from 48 and 31 yard out. Fleming added a 37-yard effort of his own making the score at halftime, 23-4 in favour of the hometown side. Fleming accounted for all of the third quarter scoring with a 58-yard punting single and a 31-yard single off a missed FG. McLoughlin’s 67‐yard single increased the Stamps’ lead to 24-6 5:50 into the final frame but the Eskimos countered right back as QB Jimmy Kemp, who was in the game to replace injured starter Danny McManus, found SB Robert Gordon alone in the end zone for a 7-yard TD. Kemp teamed up with Gordon again on the ensuing two-point convert trimming the Calgary lead to 10. However this was as close as they would get as McLoughlin added his third FG of the game, a 33-yard effort, making the final Calgary 27, Edmonton 14.
