Game Notes

Game Summary

It was a rematch of the Labour Day Classic as Calgary took the field at Commonwealth Stadium looking for their second victory over the Green and Gold in as many weeks. Edmonton opened the scoring with a single after K Sean Fleming’s 35-yard FG attempt missed its mark at 4:36 into play. Edmonton added to that lead later in the quarter when QB Jimmy Kemp teamed up with wide-out Robert Gordon for a 25-yard TD strike. Fleming’s convert was good. In the second quarter Calgary regrouped as QB Jeff Garcia hit SB Allen Pitts for a 4-yard major. K Mark McLoughlin’s convert at 5:10 narrowed the Edmonton lead to just one point. At 9:10 of that same, quarter, Fleming increased the Esks lead to 4 when his FG from 21 yards out split the uprights. Later, Calgary struck a FG of their own as McLoughlin was perfect from 23 yards out making the score 11-10 at half-time in favour of the home team. The close, hard hitting match continued into the third quarter as McLoughlin’s 45-yard FG at 4:34 gave Calgary its first lead of the night. Garcia threw his second TD pass of the night, a 25-yard strike to WR Terry Vaughn at 8:55. The McLoughlin convert gave Calgary a 20-11 advantage entering the final stanza of play. Edmonton battled back in fourth quarter starting with Fleming’s 47-yard FG at 5:15. Then DB Kavis Reed intercepted an errant Garcia pass and returned the ball 59 yards for the major at 8:03. The single point by Fleming allowed Edmonton to retake the lead by a slim one-point margin. Fleming also was good on a 23-yard FG with no time remaining in the game to make the final score 24-20 for the Eskimos. The loss drops Calgary below the Magic .500 mark, but gives Edmonton a 8-3 record, best in the west.
