Game Notes

Game Summary

These two divisions leading clubs squared off for the second time this season last Saturday evening at Edmonton’s Commonwealth Stadium. In their first contest, held earlier this year in Toronto, the Argonauts came away with a 38-14 victory over the Eskimos. The Eskimos jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead thanks to a Sean Fleming 40-yard FG and a Robert Gordon 8-yard receiving TD. Toronto’s Mike Vanderjagt pulled the Sculler’s to within 7 at 8:04 of the opening frame when his 50-yard FG attempt sailed through the uprights. Edmonton added to their lead 54 seconds into the second quarter when “The Giz”, Henry Williams, corralled a Vanderjagt punt and returned it 72 yards for the major score. This was Williams’ first punt return TD of the season and 25th of his illustrious career. The Fleming convert put Edmonton up by a 17-3 score. Vanderjagt closed the gap to 10 with a 51-yard single off a missed FG and 42-yard successful FG attempt. Fleming then made it 20-7 at 10:49 when he connected on a 24-yard FG attempt of his own. Toronto would then close out the first half scoring when SB Duane Dmytryshyn hauled in a 27-yard Doug Flutie pass at 12:48 trimming the Edmonton lead to 20-13. Vanderjagt’s ensuing convert and 56-yard single sent the Boatmen into the locker room trailing the Eskimos by a 20-15 score. Vanderjagt got Toronto to within 2 points at 4:47 of the third quarter when he booted a 33‐yard FG. This would turn out to be the only scoring of the third period. In the fourth stanza of play, Fleming added his third FG of the evening, this one from 43 yards out at 3:52, increasing the Edmonton lead to 23-18. However at 7:26, the Flutie factor kicked into gear as he teamed up with WR Derrell Mitchell for a 71-yard major. The Vanderjagt convert put the Argos ahead by 2 with 7:27 to play. However, a Fleming single was as close as the Eskimos would get on this evening as the Argonauts snuck out of Commonwealth Stadium with a 25-24 victory.
