Game Notes

Game Summary

It was the final regular season game for both of these clubs, a chance for the Eskimos to tune up for the playoffs and a chance for the Tiger-Cats to take a look at a few players who may compete for jobs in ’98. The Eskimos got on the scoreboard first at 5:43 of the opening quarter when RB Tony Burse plunged into the end zone from 1-yard out. K Sean Fleming’s convert attempt was successful and the Eskimos were up by 7. Burse then added to their lead at 9:21 scoring his second major of the quarter, this one a 2-yard run. Fleming added his second convert of the game and increased Edmonton’s lead to 14-0. Hamilton K Paul Osbaldiston put the Tabbies on the board at 12:41 with a 32-yard FG. Hamilton opened the second quarter with a little razzle-dazzle as WR Burt Thornton completed an 81-yard pass to WR Andrew Grigg at 2:11. Osbaldiston’s convert attempt was good and the Edmonton lead was cut to 4. The kickers rounded out the first half scoring with Fleming accounting for two and Osbaldiston one sending the teams into the locker room with Hamilton trailing by a 16‐11 score. Fleming broke the seal on the second half scoring a 15-yard FG at 5:33 increasing the Edmonton to 19-11. Osbaldiston trimmed the lead back to 7 with a 55-yard single before Fleming rounded out the third quarter scoring with a 36-yard FG. The Eskimos increased their lead just 0:18 into the final stanza as QB Marcus Crandell teamed up with WR Shannon Myers for a 10-yard pass and catch TD. Fleming’s third convert of the game ballooned the Eskimo lead to 29-12. The Tabbies countered back with their second major of the day when QB Marquel Fleetwood stepped into the end zone from 1-yard out. Osbaldiston’s convert cut the Edmonton lead to 30-19. However, this was as close as Hamilton would get as Fleming rounded out the games scoring with a 60-yard single making the final from Ivor Wynne Stadium, Edmonton 30 and Hamilton 19.
