Canada's national holiday to commemorate confederation is held on July 1st yeach year. Originally known as Dominion Day, it has been known officially as Canada Day since October 27, 1982. Playing regular season games on Canada Day only became necessary when the schedule was increased to 18 games and the league consisted of 9 teams or more or the schedule was moved up (such as 1984).
