Game Notes

Game Summary

Wednesday night saw the Toronto Argonauts open their 1993 Home schedule against the B.C. Lions in front of 26,759 fans at SkyDome. However, the party was short lived as the Lions came away with a 40-27 victory to run their 1993 record to 2-0 and drop Toronto’s record to 0-2. Lions’ kicker Lui Passaglia opened the scoring 5 minutes into the first quarter with a single. A Mike Trevathan TD and a Passaglia convert and FG made the score 11-0 after one period. Jon Volpe, in his first game of the year, was the Lions’ leading rusher with 17 carries for 89 yards and got the Lions jump-started in the second frame. He turned the corner on a 12-yard TD run to make the score 18-0 Lions early in the second quarter. Argonaut pivot Tracy Ham got the Boatmen on the scoreboard with a 9-yard TD run. Volpe plunged in from 3 yards out while Chomyc added a 19-yard FG making the score B.C. 25, Toronto 10 at the half. The B.C. offence picked up where it left off early in the third quarter as Danny Barrett, who was 19-of-33 for 231 yards on the day, hooked up with Ray Alexander for a 7-yard TD pass to give the Lions a 32-10 lead. Chomyc added a 27-yard FG to close the gap to 32-13 after 3 periods. After a Passaglia single, fullback Warren Hudson hooked up with QB Mike Kerrigan, who replaced an injured Tracy Ham in the second quarter, for an 11-yard TD. Toronto’s defence was tough and got them the ball back and they capitalized as Mike Clemons hauled in a 12-yard Kerrigan pass for the major. The comeback fell short, however, as a costly Illegal Substitution penalty against Toronto gave the Lions a first down on the Argonaut 43. 5 plays later the Lions’ Chris Skinner put the game out of reach with a 13-yard TD run.
