A 39-yard TD pass by Lion QB Danny Barrett to newcomer Lonnie Turner in the 3rd quarter may have been the turning point for B.C. as they defeated the visiting Rough Riders in front of a hometown crowd of 22,667 fans at B.C. Place. Veteran K Lui Passaglia capped off a 26-yard drive with a 48-yard FG at 9:24 of the opening quarter Ottawa K Terry Baker had problems connecting as he missed his first of 4 FG attempts at 13:34 for a single, making the score 3-1 to end the first period. B.C. rookie Cory Philpot scored on a 10-yard TD pass from Barrett to begin the second period before Ottawa responded with a Tom Burgess 1-yard TD run to close the gap to 2 points. Passaglia added a 15-yard FG while Ottawa countered with a Terry Baker 38-yard single to make the score at the half 13-9 in favour of the Lions. Ottawa got on the board first in the 2nd half as James Ellingson hooked up with Burgess for an 8-yard TD strike to give the Rough Riders their first lead of the game. However, the lead was short-lived as the Lions stormed back with Barrett connecting with Turner for a 39-yard TD. The see-saw battle continued, though, as Jock Climie hauled in a Tom Burgess pass for a 22-yard TD giving the Riders a 23-20 lead. Philpot electrified the B.C. Place crowd on the ensuing kickoff, returning it 91 yards for the major to put the Lions in the lead to stay. The two teams traded 4th quarter singles to make the final B.C. 28-Ottawa 24.
