The Sacramento Gold Miners, hot off their first-ever CFL win, over Saskatchewan, entertained the Edmonton Eskimos last Saturday in front of 17,827 fans at Sacramento’s Hornet Field. The Eskimos showed no mercy however, putting up 23 2nd quarter points to lead them to a convincing 43-11 win over the 1-4 Gold Miners. It didn’t take long for Edmonton to get on the board as Sean Fleming, who booted 5 FGs on the evening, connected on a 34-yard attempt. Sacramento’s Jim Crouch evened the score at 3 as he made good on a 26-yard attempt. However, this was as close as the Miners would get as the Edmonton offence got its wheels in motion with 3 Fleming FGs (19, 45 and 58 yards) and fullback Blake Marshall added 2 TDs, the second coming off a fake FG attempt, to put the Eskimos up by 20, 23-3 at the half. Crouch opened up the 3rd quarter scoring with a single off a 43-yard missed FG. Bennie Goods was “Johnny on the spot” recovering a loose ball in the end zone for Edmonton’s 3rd TD of the game. Sacramento opened the 4th quarter with their only TD of the game as Rod Harris hooked up with Archer for an 8-yard TD strike. Fleming added his 5th FG, this one from 19 yards and Eddie Brown rounded out the scoring running under a 59-yard Damon Allen pass to make the final count 43-1 for the Esks.
