Game Notes

Game Summary

The Toronto Argonauts continued their Western road swing with a game against the Saskatchewan Roughriders at Taylor Field in Regina. The Argonauts on the heels of a solid effort, albeit in a losing cause, two nights earlier in Calgary, not only had fatigue against them but also a gusting 59 km/h prairie wind. It was all Saskatchewan in the first quarter as they put 12 points on the board with the wind at their backs. Brent Matich opened the scoring with an 84-yard single. while the defence came up strong and forced the Argos to give up a 2-point safety rather than attempting the punt. Saskatchewan kicker Dave Ridgway later connected on a 25-yard FG and Kent Austin plunged in from 1-yard out to make the score 12-0 in favour of the Roughriders after 1 period of play. Lance Chomyc got Toronto on the scoreboard early in the 2nd quarter with a 55-yard single. Ridgway then added his 2nd FG of the contest, this one coming from 27 yards out. Toronto QB Mike Kerrigan, who was making his first start of the year, hooked up with Kip Lewis for their only major of the game at 9:47 of the 2nd frame. Austin then took it in himself from 2 yards out for his second TD of the game to make the score at the half 23-8 in favour of the Green ’Riders. Lance Chomyc accounted for the only scoring of the 3rd quarter, connecting from 19, 52 and 50 yards out. Jeff Fairholm hooked up with Austin 8 seconds into the fourth quarter to scuttle any thought of an Argonaut comeback. Ridgway closed out the scoring with 2 FG’s to make the final 37-17 Saskatchewan.
