Game Notes

Game Summary

It took the Toronto Argonauts 6 games but they finally notched a win last Thursday night defeating the Sacramento Gold Miners by a 37-35 margin. The Argonauts got on the scoreboard first as WR Paul Masotti hooked up with QB Mike Kerrigan for a 32-yard TD. However, the Gold Miners wasted no time in catching up as RB Mike Oliphant broke loose for a 52-yard TD run. Toronto regained the lead as kicker Lance Chomyc connected from 24 yards out to put the Argos up 10-7 after 1 period of play. The Argonauts’ run-and-shoot offence came out gunning in the second quarter, as Kerrigan hooked up with Kip Lewis for a 7-yard TD and then connected with Masotti on a 15-yard pass for his second TD of the game. Sacramento kicker Jim Crouch added a single off a missed FG to make the score 24-8 at the half. Newcomer Derrick McAdoo plunged in from 1-yard out to open the second half scoring. With 1:54 left in the 3rd quarter Crouch added a 29-yard FG to pull the Miners to within 20 after 3 frames, Chomyc, who was good on all three of his FG attempts in this game, opened up the fourth quarter scoring with an 18-yard FG. It was at 3:22 into the final frame that the Gold Miners came alive as Crouch booted a 37-yard FG to get the ball rolling for the Miners. Freeman Baysinger then took a Lance Chomyc punt back 59 yards for Sacramento’s second TD of the game. Oliphant, who carried the ball 5 times for 73 yards, picked up his second TD of the game turning the corner from 4 yards out. Chomyc added another FG, this one from 32 yards out to hinder the Sacramento comeback bid. Rod Harris hooked up with Archer from 2 yards out with 1 second on the clock but the Argonauts hung on to win 37-35 in front of 28,612 fans at SkyDome.
