Game Summary

The Calgary Stampeders upped their record to 6-0 defeating the Ottawa Rough Riders 47-22 in front of 27,341 Rider faithful at Frank Clair Stadium. Calgary quarterback Doug Flutie set a Calgary team passing record completing 24-of-38 passes for 556 yards with 1 INT and 3 TD throws. Ottawa actually got on the board first as quarterback Tom Burgess ran in from 1-yard out giving the Riders an early 7-0 lead. It took the Stamps approximately 9 minutes to tie the game up as Flutie hooked up with Will Moore for a 55-yard pass and run to even the score at 7. The Riders re-captured the lead at 10:46 into the opening frame as Burgess hooked up with Wayne Walker for a 75-yard TD. The Stampeders rounded out the first quarter scoring as Mark McLoughlin booted a 29-yard FG and Flutie found Dave Sapunjis, who ranked second amongst Calgary pass receivers with 5 receptions for 108 yards, for a 66-yard TD to make the score 16-14 in favour of the defending Grey Cup champions. The second quarter belonged to the Stamps as they put up 17 unanswered points. McLoughlin, who was good on all 4 of his FG attempts, connected from 41, 39 and 22 yards out. Linebacker Alondra Johnson scooped up a fumble and scampered 46 yards for the TD put the Stampeders up 33-14 at the half. Ottawa kicker Terry Baker opened up the 3rd quarter scoring with a 56-yard single. Flutie continued his great game by hooking up with Crawford for a 75-yard TD to close out the 3rd quarter scoring. Wayne Walker scored his second TD of the game 31 seconds into the 4th quarter and was on the receiving end of an 11-yard Burgess toss. Flutie then added the icing on the cake however, as he took it in himself from 4 yards out to make the final 47-22.
