Dave Ridgway booted 5 FGs and Ray Elgaard caught 2 TD passes leading the Saskatchewan Roughriders to a 37-10 victory over the hometown Hamilton Tiger-Cats. It didn’t take long for the “Big Green Offensive Machine” to strike as quarterback Kent Austin, who was good on 28-of-56 passes for 462 yards and 2 TDs, hooked up with Ray Elgaard for a 25-yard TD to give the ’Riders a lead that they would never relinquish. Hamilton kicker, Paul Osbaldiston booted a 37-yard FG accounting for the only Hamilton scoring of the half. Saskatchewan punter Brent Matich was credited with a 49~yard single and Mike Saunders scored from 3 yards out to make the score 24-3 in favour of the Roughriders at the half. Ridgway accounted for all of the Green ’Riders’ points in the 2nd quarter as he was good from 10, 45 and 15 yards out. Hamilton running back Bruce Perkins scored the Tabbies’ only TD of the game taking it in from 11 yards out to narrow the gap to 24-10 after 3 periods of play. Ridgway added two more FGs to open up the 4th quarter connecting from 34 and 20 yards out. Elgaard ran under a 43-yard Austin pass to make the final score 37-10. Elgaard was on the receiving end of 21 passes for 210 yards (LG-43) and 2 TDs, checking in as the ’Riders top receiver on the day.
