Game Notes

Game Summary

The Saskatchewan Roughriders sent the 20,254 in attendance at Taylor Field home satisfied as they handed the visiting Ottawa Rough Riders a 45-28 loss. The win upped the Western ’Riders’ record to 4-3, good for sole possession of 3rd place in the Western Division. The Green ’Riders scored first as the CFL’s leading rusher, Mike Saunders, carried it in from 4 yards out to give them a lead that they would never relinquish. Less than a minute later, SB Jeff Fairholm hooked up with Kent Austin for a 23-yard TD strike to put Saskatchewan out in front by 14 early in the 1st quarter. At 8:03 into the opening frame they struck again, this time it was Willie Culpepper running under an Austin pass for a 23-yard TD. Ottawa kicker Terry Baker got them on the board on the final play of the 1st quarter by booting a 28-yard FG to make the score 21-3 in favour of the Western ’Riders after 1. Saskatchewan wasted little time in the 2nd quarter as Saunders hooked up with Austin for a 30-yard TD, giving him 2 in the game. After an Ottawa safety, Don Narcisse ran under an 8-yard Austin attempt for their second major of the 2nd quarter. Ottawa WR Jock Climie finally got them into the TD column as he ran under a 25-yard Tom Burgess toss for the TD. Baker added a single at 13:04 of the 2nd frame to close out the 1st half scoring with Saskatchewan on top with a 35-13 lead. Baker added yet another single 3:25 into the 3rd frame and then Ottawa DB Charles Gordon stepped in front of an Austin pass and took it back 51 yards for the major to narrow the gap to 35-21 at the end of 3 quarters of play. Saskatchewan negated any thoughts of an Ottawa comeback 43 seconds into the final frame as Narcisse hooked up with Austin for the 2nd time, this one a 10-yard TD catch, putting them up 42-21. Saskatchewan K Dave “Robo Kicker” Ridgway added a 17-yard FG to close out the Green ’Riders’ scoring but this was all they would need as Ottawa’s Stephan Jones hauled in a 13-yard Terrence Jones pass with just 5 seconds left to make the final 45-28 in favour of Saskatchewan.
