Game Summary

The B.C. Lions upped their record to 6-2 last Wednesday with a 48-28 victory over the visiting Winnipeg Blue Bombers in front of 28,541 fans at B.C. Place. The Lions jumped out to a 14-0 1st quarter lead when Ray Alexander blocked a Troy Westwood FG attempt which was scooped up by Less Browne who returned it 85 yards for the major. Robert Mimbs then hooked up with Danny Barrett for an 8-yard pass and run to give the Lions a 14-0 lead after 15 minutes of play. B.C. added to their lead as Danny Barrett ran it in from 1-yard out to make it 21-0. Winnipeg QB Matt Dunigan finally got the Bombers on the scoreboard, plunging over from 1-yard out to narrow the gap to just 14. Winnipeg scored its second major of the 2nd quarter as David Williams ran under a Dunigan pass for a 10-yard score to make the score 21-14 with 52 seconds left to play in the half. Lui Passaglia added a late F6 to make the score 24-14 at half-time. Barrett got the Lions on the board first in the 3rd quarter scoring his 2nd TD of the game from 1-yard out to make it 31-14 in favour of the Lions. Barrett kept the Lions’ offensive machine rolling as he hooked up with Mike Trevathan for a 22-yard TD to make the tally 38-14 after 3 periods of play. A Passaglia 16-yard FG opened up the 4th quarter scoring before Bomber DB Corian Freeman stepped in front of a Barrett attempt and ran it back 96-yards for the score, cutting the lead to 20. Winnipeg continued to chip away at the lead as Alfred Jackson capped off a 6-play drive with a 60-yard TD catch to narrow the margin to 13 with just under 5 minutes left. The Lions then put together a time consuming drive which was capped off by a Mimbs 2-yard TD run to put the game out of reach. The Passaglia convert made the final 48-28 for the Lions.
