Game Summary

Dave Ridgway booted a 38-yard FG with 1:23 left on the clock to give the Saskatchewan Roughriders a 27-26 victory over the hometown Ottawa Rough Riders in front of 23,463 faithful at Frank Clair Stadium. The win upped the Green ’Riders’ record to 5-3 and dropped Ottawa’s record to 1-7. Ottawa got on the board first as quarterback Tom Burgess hooked up with slotback Jock Climie for a 51-yard TD 2:14 into the opening frame. Saskatchewan tied the score at 7 as Kent Austin hooked up with longtime favourite receiver, Ray Elgaard, for a 14-yard major. Ottawa closed out the 1st quarter scoring with Burgess finding Wayne Walker in the open for a 98-yard TD, making the score 14-7 in favour of Ottawa after 1 period of play. Saskatchewan kicker Dave Ridgway opened up the 2nd quarter scoring with a 42-yard FG to narrow the gap to just 4. The Green ’Riders’ Carlton Lance then pounced on a loose ball and took it in 9-yards for the major to give Saskatchewan their first lead of the game. Ottawa kicker Terry Baker then connected from 21 yards out to tie the score at 17. The Western ’Riders re-captured the lead as Austin hooked up with Don Narcisse for a 36-yard TD giving them a 24-17 lead. Baker closed out the 2nd quarter scoring by booting a 42-yard FG to make it 24-20 in favour of the Green ’Riders at the half. Baker’s 11-yard chip shot accounted for all of the 3rd quarter scoring making the score 24-23 for Saskatchewan after 3 quarters of play. Baker gave the Eastern Riders a 26-24 lead with a 43-yard FG with 5:11 left to play in the game. This lead was short lived however as “Robo Kicker” Ridgway connected from 38 yards out to give Saskatchewan a 27-26 lead with 1:21 remaining. Ottawa was unable to mount a comeback giving Saskatchewan a 27-26 victory.
