Game Summary

The Labour Day weekend had yet another 1 point differential in the matchup between the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and the Saskatchewan Roughriders in a battle that had Winnipeg winning in front of the second consecutive sold out crowd at Taylor Field. The defensive unit of Winnipeg accounted for the first points scored when Loyd Lewis recovered a fumble and took it 25 yards for a touchdown. K Troy Westwood then increased Winnipeg’s lead to 10-0 when he kicked one from 37 yards out, however Saskatchewan K Dave Ridgway hit for 2 successive field goals of his own when he struck from 22 and 18 yards respectively, cutting the lead to 10-6 for Winnipeg. In the second quarter, Winnipeg came back with 5 points on the basis of a safety touch and another Westwood FG, this one from 24 yards. The 3rd quarter was all Saskatchewan though, as they found their groove and hit for two touchdowns; Warren Jones went in from 1 yard out and was followed by a 34-yard TD pass from Kent Austin to Don Narcisse which made the score 20-15 for Saskatchewan. In the 4th quarter, Saskatchewan padded its lead by hammering a single from Brent Matich and a field goal from Ridgway from 33 yards out before Winnipeg started its comeback. The Blue Bombers started with a 19-yard TD pass from Matt Dunigan to Alfred Jackson and added a 37-yard field goal by Westwood with just 4 seconds remaining to win the game 25-24.
