At Hornet Field in Sacramento, the Gold Miners put on a victorious show for the 16,510 fans as they thumped the Ottawa Rough Riders by a score of 47-15. Sacramento got on the board as Mike Pringle went into the end zone from 1 yard out but Ottawa was able to drive right back and score a TD of their own when Shawn Daniels grabbed a 6-yard pass to even the score. Sacramento continued the see-saw nature of the first half though, following up with a field goal at the close of the 1st quarter and a TD to open the 2nd as they went up by a score of 17-7. Ottawa answered by coming back with a TD when QB Tom Burgess took the ball in himself from 5 yards out and then Terry Baker missed a FG which accounted for a single. In the 2nd half, the game turned out to be all Sacramento as they scored 23 points and the Miners’ defence shut out the Rough Riders’ offence. The Miners started off when K Jim Crouch kicked a 10-yard FG and then Mike Oliphant rumbled in from 14 yards away to increase Sacramento’s lead. Crouch hit another FG, this one from 21 yards and another from 14 yards before James Pruitt closed out the scoring for the day when he hauled in a 15-yard throw to make the final score 47-15 for Sacramento.
