Game Summary

In this matchup at Winnipeg Stadium, the Roughriders put up a strong fight in the first half and came closer in the 3rd quarter, but in the end were outscored by the Bombers 41-23. Winnipeg opened the game by scoring early when K Troy Westwood hit a field goal from 45 yards out in with under a minute played in the game. Saskatchewan went ahead though when SB Jeff Fairholm caught a 27-yard TD pass from QB Kent Austin and K Dave Ridgway hit from 30 yards out on the Roughriders’ next possession. Winnipeg mirrored the scoring of Saskatchewan as Westwood hit for another field goal of his own, this time from 48 yards and Nathaniel Bolton caught a 38-yard pass from O8 Matt Dunigan. They also added a TD when Dunigan carried in himself from 1 yard away to make the score 20-10 for Winnipeg. Saskatchewan closed to within a field goal when Mike Saunders had a 1-yard rush for a TD, but again Winnipeg matched the ’Riders as Dunigan went in for his 2nd of 3 rushing TDs on the day with a short rush of 2 yards. Ridgway gave Saskatchewan another 6 points as he booted 2 consecutive field goals from 41 and 17 yards respectively to put them within 4 points going into the final quarter where Winnipeg took command. Bolton grabbed his 2nd TD catch of the day from 14 yards away and Dunigan rushed for his 3rd and longest TD run on the day when he took it in from 17 yards away to close out the scoring as Saskatchewan was shut out in the final period. The final was 11-23 for Winnipeg over Saskatchewan before an overcapacity crowd of 35,959 at Winnipeg Stadium, largest in Blue Bombers’ history.
