In Saskatchewan on Sunday, the Roughriders held off a late attack by the visiting Gold Miners to win 27-20 in front of a crowd of 27,367. The Roughriders opened the scoring just over midway through the 1st quarter when QB Kent Austin hit WR Tre Everett on a 12-yard TD pass and continued their run as they struck for another 13 points as they held Sacramento scoreless. The remainder of the points came from a Dave Ridgway field goal from 30 yards out, a 1-yard TD run by RB Mike Saunders and another FG from Rigdway, this one from 10 yards out. Sacramento finally got on the board in the 3rd quarter, when QB David Archer hit RB Troy Mills with a 4-yard pass and then followed up by hitting WR Freeman Baysinger with an 83-yard pass play to bring the Gold Miners to 20-14. K Jim Crouch brought Sacramento to a tie when he booted two consecutive field goals from 34 and 12 yards respectively. However Austin took Saskatchewan back down the field and hit SB Jeff Fairholm for a 12-yard TD reception to make the final 27-20 for the Roughriders. Of note is the fact that Dave Ridgway’s consecutive field goal streak continues as he was 2-for-2 on the day.
