Game Notes

Game Summary

In a game at Taylor Field on Friday, the Roughriders met up with the Lions in a game that would give the winner sole possession of second place in the CFL Western Division. The Lions opened the scoring fairly early in front of the crowd of 22,103 when WR Mike Trevathan caught a 44-yard pass from QB Danny McManus which K Lui Passaglia followed up with a 52-yard field goal to give B.C. an early 10-0 lead. Saskatchewan got on the board later in the quarter when SB Bruce Boyko was on the receiving end of a 28-yard pass from QB Kent Austin which cut the Lion lead to 3. In the second quarter, however, Saskatchewan found its groove when, after another Passaglia FG from 34 yards, they scored 17 consecutive points which came from the offence, the defence and the special teams. The offence got its share when K Dave Ridgway hit from 34 yards away, which CB Albert Brown followed with a 108-yard return following an unsuccessful field goal attempt from 45 yards out by Passaglia for a TD and CB Carlton Lance put in his share when he returned an interception 31 yards for another TD. To close out the half, Passaglia hit for another FG, a 41-yarder. To open the 3rd, RB Jon Volpe took it in from 6 yards to bring the score to 24-23 for Saskatchewan. Ridgway countered with an 18-yarder which Passaglia answered by hitting a 36-yarder and another from 29 yards away. Going into the 4th, B.C. led 29-27 and continued to build its lead after all Saskatchewan could manage was a single to open the quarter’s scoring. Trevathan hauled in his 2nd of the day from 46 yards out, Volpe ran in for his 2nd from 3 yards, CB Andre Francis took an interception back 71 yards to close out the scoring making the final 50-28 in favour of the Lions.
