Game Summary

The matchup at Winnipeg Stadium on Saturday saw the first place team meet the second place in front of a crowd of 26,386. The Hamilton Tiger-Cats were in town to meet the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and unfortunately, the Tabbies came out on the wrong end of a blowout. The Bombers opened the scoring in the 1st quarter when RB Chris Johnstone grabbed an 11-yard pass from 08 Matt Dunigan which K Troy Westwood followed up with a 45-yard boot to make the score 10-0 in the early going. Hamilton answered by striking for a TD of their own when SB Lee Knight ran it in from 1 yard out to bring the ’Cats back to within 3 points. However, Winnipeg countered by hitting for a TD when SB Gerald Wilcox brought in a 23-yard pass from Dunigan and Westwood again followed up by kicking another FG from 38-yards away. Hamilton came back with a safety, but Westwood hit a 33-yarder for another 3 points to close out the scoring for the half at 23-9. The Bombers continued the assault on the Tiger-Cat defence when WR David Williams was on the receiving end of a 37-yard pass from Dunigan and Wilcox caught his 2nd from 34-yards away from Dunigan within the 1st six minutes of the 2nd half, LB Elfrid Payton even got into the act by returning a fumble 47 yards for a major before Hamilton put their only point of the second half on the board when K Paul Osbaldiston hit for a single. Winnipeg continued their romp in the 4th quarter as SB Gerald Alphin grabbed a 28 yard TD pass from QB Sammy Garza, Westwood hit a 27-yarder and Alphin grabbed his 2nd of the quarter from 19-yards away off the arm of QB Tom Porras to make the final 61-10 for Winnipeg.
