Game Notes

Game Summary

At Frank Clair Stadium on Saturday, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers paid a visit to the Ottawa Rough Riders in front of 18,486 fans. who were hoping the Rough Riders could take sole possession of 3rd in the Eastern Division with a win but that would not be the case. The Blue Bombers opened the scoring early in the 1st when QB Matt Dunigan found WR Gerald Wilcox with a 55-yard TD pass and RB Mike Richardson ran in from 3 yards out before FB Shawn Daniels went into the end zone from 2 yards out to cut the Winnipeg lead to 14-7 at the close of the 1st quarter. To open the 2nd, Ottawa struck for another TD when CB Joe Fuller ran back an interception 40 yards for a major. Winnipeg came right back to answer with a TD, a 75-yard pass from Dunigan to Wilcox, his 2nd of the day to go along with his 180 yards receiving on 6 catches. But Ottawa would not let up, following up with two consecutive scoring drives which resulted in a 16-yard FG from K Ray Macoritti and a TD from QB Tom Burgess to WR Rob Crifo to make the score 24-21 at the half. In the 3rd, the teams again traded scores as Winnipeg’s Troy Westwood hit for two field goals from 35 and 36 yards before Ottawa countered with a TD when Burgess hit WR Stephan Jones on a 19-yard reception. Dunigan, though, then drove the Blue Bombers down the field again and ended up with a TD when he hit WR David Williams with a 5-yard pass, however the Rough Riders countered as Burgess hit SB Jock Climie with a 49-yard pass to make the score 38-34 for Ottawa. The 4th turned out to be all Winnipeg as they managed 14 points while holding the Rough Riders scoreless. FB Matt Pearce pulled down a 30-yard TD pass from Dunigan, who then scored one of his own as he went in from 1 yard out to make the final 48-38 for the Blue Bombers.
