Game Notes

Game Summary

The CFL’s best team, the Calgary Stampeders, appeared at SkyDome on Monday night to take on the Toronto Argonauts, who in their previous encounter gave the Stampeders a tough battle. The Argos started the evening off well as K Lance Chomyc kicked a 46-yard field goal midway through the 1st quarter. But Calgary, led by QB Doug Flutie who was 16-of-25 for 292 yards and 4 TDs, didn’t take long to strike back as Flutie hit SB Dave Sapunjis, the CFL’s leading receiver for a TD on a 17-yard pass. Toronto came back though to tie the game as Chomyc hit another FG from 24 yards out and also scored a single in the 2nd quarter. That was all the offence that the Argos would manage to put together for the day however as the Stampeders shut them out for the remainder of the day. Following Chomyc’s single, Sapunjis grabbed his 2nd TD of the day from Flutie on a 24-yard pass and was Calgary’s leading receiver with 8 catches for 141 yards. Calgary’s WR Will Moore got into the act as he caught a 6-yard Flutie TD pass to make the score 20-7 at the end of the 2nd quarter. In the 3rd, Flutie took it in to the end zone himself from 3 yards away and also managed to find WR Brian Wiggins with a 28-yard TD pass. Backup QB Steve Taylor entered the game in the 4th quarter, after a brief appearance in the 1st half, and picked up where Flutie left off. He hit WR Derrick Crawford on a 54-yard TD pass and also found Moore on a 14-yard reception, both for their 2nd TD of the day, before K Mark McLoughlin came in and put Calgary over the 50 point mark when he kicked a 32-yard FG with under 2 minutes to go.
