At Frank Clair Stadium on Friday, the Ottawa Rough Riders welcomed the Edmonton Eskimos and were hoping to be able to improve their playoff hopes with a win in front of the 19,580 fans. Edmonton’s K Sean Fleming was responsible for 4 of Edmonton’s first 5 scores as he kicked a single followed by field goals of 48, 35 and 35 yards to give the Eskimos a 12-0 lead. In between Fleming’s kicking, the Edmonton defence got into the act and tackled Ottawa QB Tom Burgess in the end zone for a safety before the Rough Riders got on the board. Ottawa then scored a TD on a 57-yard pass play when Burgess hit WR Walter Stanley. K Paul McCallum added to that count when he kicked a 24-yard FG to cut the Eskimo lead to 13-10 at the half. In the 3rd quarter, the only scoring took place when McCallum added another field goal, this time from 16 yards away to tie the game with just under 20 minutes to play. In the 4th, Ottawa hit for another FG from 13 yards out to take the lead for the first time, however, it was short-lived as Edmonton came back with FGs of their own as Fleming hit from 30 yards and then again from 23 yards to give Edmonton a 3-point lead with less than 50 seconds remaining. The Rough Riders came back though and had a chance to win on a last second FG from 33 yards but McCallum was wide and the Eskimos squeaked out a victory 19-17.
