Game Notes

Game Summary

In a game that featured 2 of the CFL’s top QBs, the defences were put to work as the Stampeders and Roughriders combined for 93 points and 1,174 passing yards for a new CFL record for Most Yards Passing by Both Teams in One Game, in a shootout at Taylor Field on Saturday as 26,137 fans watched on. In the first half, the game was definitely in Saskatchewan’s hands as they controlled the ball and the scoring and were able to put up 35 points in the opening half. QB Kent Austin opened the scoring as he ran the ball in from 1 yard out to give Saskatchewan the early lead and then added to it when SB Jeff Fairholm caught a 28-yard pass for a TD before QB Doug Flutie put Calgary on the scoreboard when he ran the ball in himself from 18 yards to cut the Roughrider lead to 7 points. But the Roughriders answered back when Austin carried in from 1 yard and then just over 1 minute later he mirrored the same play as he again had a 1-yard rush for a TD to put Saskatchewan up 28-7. Austin, who was 33-of-42 for 546 yards with 2 interceptions and 3 TD passes, added to what appeared to be a blowout when he hit SB Bruce Boyko for a 9-yard TD pass before Calgary K Mark McLoughlin kicked a FG with no time remaining in the 2nd quarter from 32 yards away to make the score 35-10 at the half. To open the 3rd, Flutie ran it in from 2 yards out and then SB Ray Elgaard caught a 15-yard Austin pass for a TD to add to his record-breaking day in which he broke the CFL record for most yards receiving, by catching 10 passes for 154 yards. After Elgaard’s TD, the Stampeders offence broke loose when SB Dave Sapunjis went 75 yards on a Flutie pass and WR Brian Wiggins caught 2 consecutive TD passes from 10 and 42 yards and suddenly the score was 42-37 for the ’Riders with just over half the quarter left to play. K Dave Ridgway hit an 8-yard FG, and then Flutie threw a 5-yard TD pass to Wiggins, his 3rd of the day and followed WR Derrick Crawford’s 2-point convert. With 1 second on the clock, Ridgway kicked a 34-yarder for the win.
