Game Notes

Game Summary

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers paid a visit to the confines of Frank Clair Stadium to take on the Ottawa Rough Riders in a meeting of Eastern division rivals before 19,240 people on Saturday night. Winnipeg opened the scoring midway through the 1st quarter when QB Sammy Garza hit WR David Williams on a 12-yard pass to give the Bombers an early lead. However, Ottawa was able to strike back as they put together two consecutive FGs of 27 and 35 yards from Paul McCallum to cut into Winnipeg’s lead. But the Bombers then managed to put together a sustained string of drives and scored 3 consecutive FGs to go up 16-6. The teams again traded FGs as McCallum hit from 13 yards and Westwood kicked an 11-yarder to make the score 19-9 at the half. To open the 3rd quarter, the Bombers scored a major as Garza found WR Gerald Wilcox on a 35-yard pass play to widen the lead, but Ottawa managed to come right back and score a TD of their own as QB Tom Burgess hit SB Jock Climie for a 28-yard passing TD. Winnipeg put the game out of reach when they hit for a FG midway through the 3rd as Westwood kicked a 40-yarder and then midway through the 4th, Garza found RB Mike Richardson with a 15-yard TD pass to give the Bombers a 36-16 victory.
