Game Notes

Game Summary

Field goals were the play of the day as 24 of the 45 points scored were by field goal. 23,584 fans watched a barn burner that included a 36 minute game delay due to a severe lightning and thunderstorm. The Roughriders went into this game looking for their first win of the season after losing badly to Hamilton last week. On the other hand, the Eskimos were looking to continue their winning ways after beating Toronto last week. K Sean Fleming opened the scoring for the Eskimos on a 52 yard field goal. The Western ’Riders fought back with a Tom Burgess 1 yard touchdown run to give Riders a 7-3 lead at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter was all K Dave Ridgway. He booted three field goals from 36, 51, and 25 yards out to give Saskatchewan a 16-3 lead at half time. Edmonton tied the game 2:12 into the third quarter on a 100 yard passing play between Chris Vargas and Lucius Floyd. The third quarter belonged to the Edmonton kicker Sean Fleming who helped the Esks get back in the game with two field goals of 40 and 20 yards. The kickers then exchanged field goals to make the score tied at nineteen after regulation time. The first overtime half saw Edmonton control the play scoring a touchdown on a 1 yard Vargas run with 0:44 seconds left in the half. Saskatchewan had a chance to move the ball in the second half of the overtime but could not score. The result, Edmonton leaves the game with a perfect 2-0 record after an exciting, long game. Willie Pless again proved why he is the all-time defensive tackle leader by recording 12 more.
