Game Notes

Game Summary

Twenty thousand Ti-Cats fans came to Ivor Wynne Stadium Friday night in hopes of seeing Hamilton win their second game in a row. Dynamic QB Steve Taylor went up against the powerful arm of B.J. Tolliver in a game that also included two of the Leagues top defensive tacklers — Hamilton’s Mike O’Shea and Shreveport’s Ben Williams. Hamilton opened the scoring on their first drive of the game. Taylor threw an 8 yard pass to Kalin Hall to cap a 9 play drive. Paul Osbaldiston kicked the point after. Shreveport came right back on the following series scoring on a 5 yard TD pass from Tolliver to Wayne Walker. Nittmo’s convert attempt was good. With time running out in the first quarter, Osbaldiston gave Hamilton the lead by kicking a 34 yard field goal. Junior Smith put points on the board for Shreveports’ special teams. Smith blocked Osbaldiston’s punt on the 30-yard line and carried the loose ball in from the 5-yard line for a touchdown. Nittmo booted the convert. Hamilton got within 1 point of Shreveport before half time when Osbaldiston fired a field goal through the uprights from 31 yards out. A slow third quarter saw Nittmo score the only points on a 38 yard field goal. With 5 minutes left in the game, the Ti-Cats brought in QB Anthony Calvillo. Six plays later Calvillo hit Earl Winfield for a 40 yard touchdown pass. Osbaldiston’s convert tied the game at 20 with 4:41 left to play. The Hamilton defence came up big with Derek Grier intercepting Tolliver giving the offence the ball at Shreveport’s 33-yard line. Calvillo hit Winfield again for a huge gain setting up Hamilton on the Shreveport 1 line. Calvillo ran a “naked bootleg” play into the end zone for the game winning touchdown. Osbaldiston again made the convert. The Tiger-Cats sealed the win with 42 yard field goal by Osbaldiston as time ran out on the Shreveport Pirates.
