Game Summary

The underdog Shreveport Pirates went into B.C. Place Stadium Saturday and upset the Lions handing them their third loss of the season. Shreveport entered the game in last place in the Southern Division, 2 points behind San Antonio and Memphis. The victory tied themselves with Memphis at 4 wins and 6 losses in the South and allowed Edmonton to tie B.C. for second place in the North. Shreveport kicker Bjorn Nittmo booted a 35 yard field goal to open the scoring. Lui Passaglia tied the game and later took the lead for B.C. on 32 and 19 yard field goals respectively. In the second quarter, Martin Patton took the ball in from the 2-yard line for the major. Nittmo kicked the convert. Passaglia brought the Lions within one point of the Pirates before half time booting a 20 yard field goal. League leading TD scorer Cory Philpot notched another by running the ball 75 yards for the score. Passaglia kicked the convert. B.C.’s final scoring of the game came off the foot of Passaglia in the third quarter. He kicked a 39 yard field goal to give the Lions a 19 to 10 lead. Shreveport’s’ comeback began late in the third quarter as Billy Joe Tolliver hooked up with Wayne Walker for a 60 yard touchdown pass. Nittmo kicked the convert. The only scoring of the fourth quarter gave the Pirates a lead they refused to give up. Nittmo kicked a 19 yard field goal which proved the be the game winner.
