After two wins in his first two games, the Calgary Stampeders were looking to Jeff Garcia to continue his outstanding play in Edmonton last Friday for the rematch of the Labour Day game in Calgary. Edmonton, on the other hand were looking for revenge after losing the first match up 51 to 26. Edmonton got on the board early as punter Glenn Harper sent a punt 53 yards to record the single. Calgary countered minutes later with a 34 yard field goal from Mark McLoughlin. Late in the first quarter the Eskimo defence stood up the Stamp’s on the Edmonton 2-yard line. As a result, Calgary had to settle for a 9 yard McLoughlin field goal. Calgary continued to pull ahead in the second quarter. Shawn Daniels ran the ball in from the 1-yard line for the first TD of the game. McLoughlin’s convert attempt was good. Edmonton scored 2 more singles in the half to help their cause. Kicker Sean Fleming missed two field goal attempts from 33 and 47 yards respectively for these scores. The only scoring of the hard fought third quarter came as Calgary’s Terry Vaughn caught an 8 yard TD pass from Garcia. The game opened up in the fourth quarter with a total of 24 points being scored. Calgary scored a touchdown early as defensive tackle DeWayne Patterson recovered Chris Vargas’ fumble and ran it 2 yards into the end zone. McLoughlin kicked the convert. Edmonton scored their first TD of the game five minutes into the quarter as Eric L. Blount caught a 5 yard pass from Vargas for the major. Fleming kicked the point after. The Stampeder’s McLoughlin kicked two more field goals. These ones from 37 and 31 yards out. Edmonton tried to fight back but could not come up with enough. Eskimo defensive back Singor Mobley recovered a Craig Brenner fumble and ran it back 72 yards for the TD. Fleming’s extra point made the final score Calgary 33 and Edmonton 17. Garcia continued to play well completing 73% of his passes and throwing for one TD.
