Game Summary

The fight in the Southern Division for the playoff spots means that every game is a huge one. For San Antonio, beating the Argos would mean holding on to second place, possibly in a tie with Birmingham. San Antonio came out to play for keeps scoring 32 points in the first half and not letting up any. Texan kicker Roman Anderson started the onslaught with a 37 yard field goal. Minutes later he put another through the uprights, this time from 43 yards out. Texan DE James King got on the board tackling Marvin Graves in the end zone for a safety. San Antonio’s defence got on the board twice more in the first half. LB Maurice Miller intercepted Graves and ran the ball back 19 yards for a TD. Anderson kicked the convert. On Toronto’s next possession, Malcolm Frank intercepted Graves again and ran the ball back 67 yards for the major. Anderson’s convert gave the Texans a 22 to 0 lead. midway through the second quarter San Antonio quarterback David Archer connected with Troy Mills for a 3 yard passing TD. Anderson, again, kicked the convert. Minutes later Anderson booted his third field goal of the game, this one a 41 yard shot. The second half saw the Argonauts get on the score sheet for the first time. QB Kent Austin ran the ball in for a touchdown from the 1-yard line. Terry Baker kicked the convert. Roman Anderson kicked his third and final FG of the game, this time from 10 yards out. San Antonio extended their lead in the third quarter with Archer and David Gamble hooking up for a 13 yard TD pass. Anderson kicked the convert. Toronto tried to come back in the fourth quarter. Austin threw an 11 yard pass to Jock Climie for the Argos second TD of the game. Baker kicked the convert. Mike “Pinball” Clemons also scored for the Argos. “Pinball” carried the ball in from the 8-yard line for the major. Baker’s convert gave Toronto 21 points, but that was all they could muster on this date. San Antonio won the game 42 to 21.
