The Calgary Stampeders had an opportunity to clinch a playoff berth with a win over Winnipeg. It was up to Doug Flutie’s replacement Jeff Garcia to get the job done. Garcia did not let anyone down; throwing for 275 yards including 4 touchdowns. His first TD pass of the game was to Vince Danielsen covering 12 yards. Mark McLoughlin kicked the convert. McLoughlin got the call again later in the quarter. His 23 yard field goal attempt split the uprights to give Calgary a 10 point lead. Terry Vaughn was the recipient of Garcia’s next TD pass. The two hooked up for a 17 yard play that was converted by McLoughlin. Outstanding wide receiver Allen Pitts opened scoring in the second quarter for Calgary with a 5 yard pass reception from Garcia. McLoughlin’s convert made the score 24 to 0 for Calgary. Winnipeg got on the board five minutes into the second quarter with a 39 yard Troy Westwood field goal. Calgary kicker McLoughlin kicked two more field goals before half-time from 22 and 49 yards respectively. With no time left on the clock in the half, Westwood hit a 34 yard field goal attempt. Winnipeg put their first TD on the board early in the third quarter when Reggie Slack threw a 7 yard pass to Allan Boyko. Westwood hit the convert. Calgary DB Marvin Coleman took the wind out of Winnipeg’s sails when he returned Westwood’s missed 50 yard FG attempt 108 yards for a touchdown. McLoughlin missed the convert attempt. Westwood made sure he did not miss his next attempt as he sent the ball 28 yards through the uprights for the score. Garcia continued cashing in on the talented receivers in his line up. CFL pass receiving leader David Sapunjis caught a 48 yard pass for Garcia’s fourth passing TD of the game. McLoughlin made the convert. Blue Bomber WR Shannon Baker capitalized on Calgarys’ poor field position returning a punt 51 yards for a touchdown. QB Kevin McDougal’s two-point convert attempt failed. In the dying minutes of the game McDougal connected with newly acquired WR Milt Stegall for a 14 yard TD pass. Again, McDougal attempted a two-point convert and failed. Calgary’s decisive victory led by QB Jeff Garcia clinched a playoff spot for the Stampeders.
