With Edmonton in a bye week, B.C. had a chance to move into a tie with the Eskimos for second place in the North. Calgary, in contrast, are not in any kind of playoff race. They are working toward setting a CFL record for wins in a season with 17. After losing to Birmingham early in the season, the Stamps have gone undefeated the rest of the way. In a slow first quarter, Calgary punter Anthony Martino scored the Stampeders only point with a 54 yard punting single. All-time points leader Lui Passaglia answered for the Lions with 11 and 45 yard field goals before the end of the quarter. Calgary regained the lead early in the second when Terry Vaughn was on the receiving end of a 3 yard Jeff Garcia pass. Mark McLoughlin kicked the convert. B.C. fought back as Robert Gordon caught a 34 yard pass from Danny McManus. Passaglia kicked the convert. Calgary caught up all but 2 points of their deficit when McLoughlin kicked a 32 yard field goal. B.C.’s Robert Gordon recorded his second passing TD of the game taking an 18 yard pass from McManus into the end zone. Passaglia’s convert gave B.C. a 9 point lead at half-time. Calgary’s defence kept B.C. off the board in the third quarter as Jeff Garcia got into McLoughlin’s field goal range three times to tie the game up. His attempts came from 36, 45, and 8 yards respectively. Garcia took over in the fourth quarter. At the 3:02 mark, he carried the ball in from the 15-yard line to take the lead for Calgary for the first time since the 9:16 mark of the second quarter. SB Vince Danielsen caught a Garcia TD pass minutes later taking the ball in from the 6 for the major. At 11:49, Garcia and Vaughn connected for the second time in the game for a 41 yard TD passing play. Mark McLoughlin kicked the converts on all three Calgary touchdowns. B.C. were able to put 7 more points on the board but it was all they could do. A 39 yard pass from Giulio Caravatta to Cory Philpot and converted by Passaglia brought the Lions to 2 touchdowns shy of the Stampeders. The game ended at this margin moving Calgary one win closer to their goal of 17 wins for the season.
