The Alamodome in San Antonio hosted this week’s stand off between the Rough Riders and the Texans. With San Antonio in the middle of a tight race for playoff positions in the South Division, the game had a lot at stake. It was obvious from the start the Texans had more to lose. They opened up the scoring with a 39 yard field goal by Roman Anderson and never looked back. Minutes later, RB Mike Saunders carried the ball in from the 8-yard line to cap a 67 yard series with a touchdown. Anderson kicked the convert. Saunders got on the board again in the second quarter catching a 36 yard pass from QB David Archer for the major. Again, Anderson kicked the convert. David Gamble took the ball in for the next Texan TD. His 4 yard reception following a blocked punt and recovery, along with Anderson’s convert, put the Texans up 23 to 0. Anderson booted his second field goal of the game, this time from 15 yards out to further extend San Antonio’s lead. With time running out in the half, Billy Hess caught a 5 yard TD pass from Archer. Anderson’s convert made the half-time score 33 to 0 for San Antonio. Ottawa got on the board early in the third quarter. Deon Strother ran the ball in from the 1-yard line for the score. Wayne Lammle kicked the convert. Saunders got his third TD of the game for San Antonio minutes later. Archer threw a 13 yard pass for the major. Anderson kicked the convert. The only other scoring of the quarter was Roman Anderson’s third field goal of the game, a 28 yard shot. Ottawa began a comeback in the fourth quarter scoring 23 points. Ottawa Kicker, Lammie, put a 33 yard field goal attempt through to get the ball rolling. Ottawa SB Jay Christensen kept things going with a 19 yard reception from Sammy Garza. Lammle kicked the convert. Eight year veteran WR Ray Alexander took advantage of his first game returning punts by taking one 76 yards for a touchdown. Garza’s two-point convert attempt failed. Alexander accounted for one more TD before the end of the game. Garza’s 18 yard TD pass and Lammle’s convert made the final tally San Antonio 43 over Ottawa 30.
