Game Notes

Game Summary

Coming off a strong performance to open the season, the Stampeders were now at home hosting the Winnipeg Blue Bombers who were playing their first game of the year. Winnipeg scored first ending their first drive of the match with a 44 yard field goal by Troy Westwood. Calgary came back to dominate the rest of the first half. Jeff Garcia hit Terry Vaughn with a 6 yard pass for the Stamp’s first major of the game. Mark McLoughlin kicked the convert. McLoughlin got the call twice more before the end of the half and made good on 40 and 28 yard field goal attempts. Anthony Martino also got on the board for the Stamps. Martino sent 67 yard and 70 yard punts into the end zone for singles. Garcia and Sapunjis connected from 25 yards out to open the scoring in the third quarter. McLoughlin kicked the convert. Winnipeg, facing a huge deficit, scored their first major of the season as Kent Austin threw a 29 yard TD pass to Gerald Wilcox. Westwood converted. Calgary running back Kelvin Anderson extended the Stampeder lead scoring on a 4 yard run. Again, McLoughlin converted. Westwood missed on a 28 yard field goal attempt but did manage to score the single for the Bombers. The Stampeders continued to pad their lead scoring on a 19 yard McLoughlin field goal. Less than a minute later Greg Knox intercepted a pass from Austin. Anthony McClanahan took a lateral from Knox and ran in for the score, 78 yard in total. McLoughlin’s convert rounded out the scoring for the night giving the Stampeders a convincing 39 to 12 win.
