With Tracy Ham completely recovered from an early season injury, the Montreal Alouettes were going to be a force to be reckoned with even though they were winless to this point. The Lions, on the other hand, were determined to battle hard for their first win of the year. Montreal scored first when Terry Baker capped the Als first possession with a 24 yard field goal. The Alouettes continued to move the ball well. RB Mike Saunders topped the 9 play, 74 yard drive with a 1 yard touchdown run. Baker’s convert pushed Montreal ahead 10 to 0 at the end of the first quarter. Lui Passaglia got the Lions on the board early in the second with a 15 yard field goal. The Alouettes countered minutes later with a 37 yard field goal to maintain their 10 point margin. B.C.’s offence started to click near the mid-point of the quarter. QB Andre Ware connected with RB Cory Philpot for an 18 yard passing touchdown. Passaglia kicked the convert. B.C.’s defence got on the score sheet on the first play following the kickoff. CB Brandon Hamilton intercepted a Ham pass and returned it 48 yards for the touchdown. The touchdowns and Passaglia’s converts gave B.C. the lead within a minute of play. Montreal battled back. Dexter Dawson took the ball in from the 1-yard line to regain the lead for the Alouettes. Baker’s convert put the Als ahead by 3 at halftime. Montreal came out looking strong in the second half. Ham scored his third passing TD of the year by hitting Jock Climie from 27 yards out for the major. Baker kicked the convert. With B.C.’s offence struggling, the special teams unit decided to get in the action. David Maeva blocked a punt attempt by Terry Baker. The loose ball was recovered by Reggie Carthon and returned 6 yards for a touchdown. Passaglia’s point after brought the Lions back to within 3 of the Alouettes. Montreal controlled the game from here on. Baker started the onslaught with a 24 yard field goal as time ran out in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, Ham connected for two more passing touchdowns to solidify the Alouettes first win since their move from Baltimore in the off-season. SB Chris Armstrong was the first target catching a 10 yard pass for the major. Wide-out Nigel Williams was the other recipient of a Ham TD pass. Williams touchdown play covered 60 yards. Baker converted both fourth quarter TDs for the Als. Montreal’s first win of the year came in convincing fashion by topping the Lions by 20 points.
