Game Notes

Game Summary

Toronto’s powerful offence, led by QB Doug Flutie, traveled to Taylor Field in Regina to face the 0.500 Saskatchewan Roughriders. Toronto came out of the gate very strong controlling the ball for the first ten minutes of the game. RB Robert Drummond was the first to take the ball into the ’Rider end zone for the Argonauts. His 2 yard touchdown run followed an impressive drive that started on the Toronto 4-yard line. Mike Vanderjagt kicked the convert. The Argos scored again three minutes later when Vanderjagt sent a 17 yard field goal attempt through the uprights. Saskatchewan QB Warren Jones got things going on the ’Riders next possession. Jones directed the team up field from their 34-yard line finishing the drive with an 8 yard touchdown pass to Curtis Mayfield. Brent Matich kicked the convert. Flutie and the Argos took off in the second quarter. Flutie hit Paul Masotti with a 12 yard TD pass just seconds into the quarter. Vanderjagt kicked the convert. Following Saskatchewan’s next possession, Jimmy “The Jet” Cunningham returned Matich’s punt 73 yards for a touchdown. Again, Vanderjagt kicked the convert. Flutie accounted for the next Toronto major on his own. The agile QB took the ball in from the 18-yard line for the Argonauts fourth touchdown of the game. Vanderjagt’s convert attempt was good. Late in the half, the Saskatchewan offence began to get on track. Jones moved the team up field culminating in a 1 yard TD run by Peter Tuipulotu. Matich kicked the convert. Toronto kicker Vanderjagt brought the Argo scoring total to 24 for the second quarter with a 50 yard field goal as the horn went to end the half. Both teams sat back for the remainder of the game. The only scoring of the third quarter was a 47 yard field goal by Vanderjagt. In the fourth quarter, Saskatchewan put two points on the board when Vanderjagt conceded the safety instead of punting from his own goal line. Vanderjagt notched his fourth field goal of the game from 23 yards out to round off Toronto’s scoring at 40. The Argo’s powerful offence flexed their muscle with a 24 point victory over the Western ’Riders.
