It was no surprise that the Calgary Stampeders came out hungry following their first loss of the year. Mark McLoughlin was the hero for the Stampeders this week kicking eight field goals to tie a CFL record for most field goals in one game. McLoughlin’s first attempt came late in the first quarter as he sent a 35 yard shot through the uprights. With 0:00 on the clock in the first, McLoughlin smashed a 52 yard attempt well over the crossbar for field goal number two. McLoughlin extended Calgary’s lead early in the second with a 24 yard shot. Stampeder special teams got on the score sheet when Jackie Kellogg blocked a punt attempt by Brent Matich from the Saskatchewan 5 yard line. Greg Knox jumped on the loose ball in the end zone to score the major for the Stamps. McLoughlin kicked the convert. Minutes later, Robert Mimbs capped a long drive for the Roughriders with a 4 yard touchdown run. Newly acquired kicker Frank Jagas sent the extra point through. Calgary’s McLoughlin kept on a roll later in the quarter with a 47 yard field goal, his fourth of the contest. With time running out in the first half, Jagas missed a 32 yard attempt wide but did score a single making the half-time score 19 to 8 for Calgary. Third quarter scoring belonged to Mark McLoughlin. Field goals from 39, 15, and 42 yards out increased Calgary’s lead and came one field goal shy of a CFL record for most field goals in one quarter. The busy night for McLoughlin continued in the fourth quarter when he sent a 32 yard blast through for his eighth of the night. The Stampeders brought in QB Danny Barrett into the game mid way through the final quarter and he proceeded to march the team down field. Barrett connected with Vince Danielsen for a 26 yard touchdown pass with roughly three minutes left to play. McLoughlin’s convert brought his scoring total to 26 for the night. Saskatchewan K Jagas sent a 37 yard attempt through late in the game to account for the last of the Roughriders scoring on the night. The game proved to be highly successful for McLoughlin as he moved into the CFL record book and the Stampeders as they took sole possession of first place in the West.
