Game Notes

Game Summary

For Toronto Argonaut QB Doug Flutie, it was just like old times. During his time in Calgary, there were no shortage of epic battles between the Stampeders and the Eskimos and although he has moved east, this game was no different. 20,030 enthusiastic Argonaut supporters saw a quality football game dominated primarily by defence and special teams. Flutie opened up the scoring at 9:15 into the opening frame when he plunged in from 1 yard out. K Mike Vanderjagt added the convert to put the Boatmen up by 7. Edmonton countered with just 13 seconds remaining on the clock when LB Willie Pless, who is used in most goal line situations, took it over from 1 yard out. K Sean Fleming’s convert made the score 7-7 at the end of one period of play. The Eskimos grabbed the lead at 10:05 of the second quarter when SB Eddie Brown hooked up with QB Danny McManus for a 9 yard TD strike. The Fleming convert gave the Esks a 7 point lead. This lead was short lived however as Flutie found RB Robert Drummond over the middle for a 32 yard TD. Vanderjagt added the convert sending the two teams into the locker room deadlocked at 14. The only third quarter scoring came when RB Mike Clemons scampered in from 15 yards out for his second rushing TD of the season. Vanderjagt’s convert restored Toronto’s lead to 7 points after three quarters of play. The Eskimos played with determination all night and it paid off at 8:56 of the fourth when McManus hooked up with last seasons’ Rookie of the Year, SB Shalon Baker for a 56 yard TD pass. Fleming added the convert tying the game at 21. On this night, it was the foot of Vanderjagt that would give the Argonauts the victory as he nailed a 38 yard field goal at 13:59. A last ditch effort by the Eskimos was halted by an interception allowing the Argonauts to then run out the clock preserving a 24-21 victory. The win upped the Argos record to 6-1 while the Eskimos fell to 4-3 with the loss.
