Game Notes

Game Summary

It was first against worst in the West Division on Wednesday night as the B.C. Lions traveled to McMahon Stadium to take on the Calgary Stampeders. Although it seemed like this was going to be an easy win for the Stampeders, the Lions showed that they are a concern. B.C. opened scoring in the game with a 14 yard field goal by Lui Passaglia. Calgary countered at the mid-point of the first quarter with a field goal by Mark McLoughlin covering 20 yards. Calgary scored the first major of the game when QB Jeff Garcia hit Dave Sapunjis with a 5 yard pass. McLoughlin’s convert put the Stamps up by 7. Lions K Passaglia sent his second field goal of the day, a 42 yard boot, through the uprights to narrow the margin to 4 heading into the locker room at half-time. Early in the third, Calgary K McLoughlin sent a 39 yard field goal through the uprights to regain the 10 point advantage for the Stamps. B.C. fought back at the 10:00 mark as QB Damon Allen hit WR Mike Trevathan with an 11 yard touchdown pass. Passaglia kicked the convert. Once again Calgary regained their 10 point margin when Garcia scampered into the end zone from 9 yards out. B.C.’s Passaglia recorded a punting single minutes later sending a 41 yarder into the end zone. At 12:48 of the fourth, RB Sean Millington capped a 91 yard drive with a 1 yard touchdown run. Passaglia’s convert gave B.C. a slim 1 point lead. Calgary showed why they are the West Division leaders in the dying seconds of the game. They controlled the ball well and moved down field into the field goal range of McLoughlin. With 0:08 on the clock McLoughlin sent a 25 yard kick through the uprights to win the game for the Stampeders. Although the Lions could not manage to win this game, they proved that they are a force to be reckoned with.
