On a magnificent late August afternoon, the Ottawa Rough Riders invaded Toronto’s SkyDome to take on the powerful Toronto Argonauts. The Argonauts, fresh off a victory over the same Rough Riders just a week previous, knew they were in a football game from the opening gun. The Argonauts drew first blood 3:55 into the opening frame when QB Doug Flutie carried it in himself from 8 yards out. K Mike Vanderjagt added the convert giving the Boatmen a 7-0 lead. That lead doubled at 11:51 when RB Robert Drummond plunged over from 1 yard out. The Vanderjagt convert closed out the first quarter scoring with Toronto up by 14. The Riders countered back with a TD of their own 12:33 into the second frame when newly acquired WR Wayne Walker hooked up with QB David Archer for a 24 yard TD strike. K Wayne Lammle added the first of his three converts on the day. Powerful Argo RB Drummond then scored his second TD of the day, this one a 26 yard TD reception from Flutie. With the convert, Toronto were well on their way with a 21-7 lead. Ottawa once again fought back, this time it was Archer connecting with SB Robert Gordon for the 8 yard major. The score at the end of two quarters saw the Argonauts up by 7 at 21-14. Toronto WR Paul Masotti, who later would have to leave the game with an ankle injury, extended their lead to 14 when he ran under a Flutie pass for a 7 yard TD. Ottawa once again however showed their grit and determination when Archer found SB Andre Bolduc for a 6 yard TD pass. However, this would be as close as they would come as both teams failed to put up any fourth quarter points making the final 28-21 In favour of the Argonauts.
