In a time when the Rough Riders desperately needed the support, they got it as 28,451 enthusiastic fans converged on Frank Clair Stadium to watch their team win their second game of the season. The opponents were no pushovers either as the Alouettes entered the game with three straight wins in their pockets. Ottawa opened the scoring at 12:45 when LB Ray Bernard blocked a Terry Baker punt attempt deep in Montreal territory. DB Frank West hopped on the loose ball and scrambled 6 yards for the TD. K Wayne Lammle added the convert. The Riders were able to add to this lead at 7:28 of the second quarter when Lammle connected on a 36 yard FG attempt. WR Wayne Walker would round out the first half scoring at 13:37 when he hooked up with QB David Archer for a 33 yard receiving TD. Neither team was able to put a point on the board in the third quarter. Montreal finally got going early in the fourth quarter when K Terry Baker booted a 24 yard FG just 42 seconds into the final frame. He would add another FG at 6:08, this time from 32 yards away, but this was as close as the Alouettes would get as the Riders hung on and defeated the Als by a 17-6 count.
